One of the many benefits of joining Purlife Fitness Center is that each and every member receives a complimentary fitness assessment with one of the facility’s qualified trainers to help identify your current condition, discuss your fitness and health goals, and devise a plan to reach them. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or maintain your shape, this extensive assessment can really help pinpoint exactly what you need to do to achieve success.

What To Expect

The PT Fitness Assessment 1

Purlife Master Trainer Ryan Huffman takes Shaina through the questionnaire

The assessment is broken up into two parts — informational and physical. During the first section, your trainer will collect your health and medical history.  Additionally, questions are asked to get a good idea of the current mindset of the client in regards to their lifestyle, commitment, and focus (or lack-thereof).  This conversation is then followed by three components:

  • InBody Analyzer – Using a sophisticated bioelectrical impedance scale, this gathers data on your current weight, body composition, segmental lean development, and body water levels. *Interesting fact – I learned this is best done in a fasted state as any food, caffeine, etc. can skew the results*
  • Fit3D BodyScan – This 40 second 3D scan provides several key body measurements and markers so that we can your progress can be tracked with quantifiable metrics. Additionally, this evaluates your static posture, helping your trainer to identify any muscle imbalance or asymmetry to help lower the risk of future injury.  *Interesting fact – seeing this visual 3D image is really helpful when looking at posture and where one can improve upon*
  • Functional Movement Screen – You will be asked to perform a short series of movements to further identify any imbalance or asymmetry and then employ that information to determine specific exercises needed in your overall training program. *Interesting fact – this particular assessment is also used by many professional sports franchises! I even received a detailed report via email which analyzed my score*

The Value Of The Assessment

The PT Fitness Assessment 5

The Workout Included Kettlebell Goblet Squats

For those who are brand new to a gym setting, a fitness assessment is just the thing you need to make you feel more comfortable in the gym and with your workouts. Even as someone who has been a member of Purlife Fitness Center for over three years and works out 6-7 days a week, it’s not always the easiest thing for me to know what types of exercises I should be doing for my body type and goals — especially since I’m so used to attending one of the many group training classes offered through Purlife where trainers put together a routine for you. Personal Trainer Ryan Huffman created a short but very effective workout for me during our assessment that I could easily remember and do on my own if I can’t make it to a class one day, or if I’m traveling and have to use a hotel gym. It got my heart pumping and provided me with a 30 minute routine that can be done in most gym settings.

The information gathered through the InBody, Fit3D and FMS provided me with great insight about how my body moves.  I can understand how important these protocols can be, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I’m not as lopsided as I thought I would be!

And believe me; even if you don’t necessarily train one-on-one with them, just establishing a relationship with the trainers helps to keep you accountable and provides you with a never-ending resource for advice and tips on how to get the most out of your workout.
